Cow Green Geological Trail Walk

7th May 2023

Are you ready for an adventure in Upper Teesdale National Nature Reserve?  Lace up your hiking boots and head out on the Cow Green Geological Trail Walk, a 12km trek that takes you on a journey through stunning landscapes and geological formations.

Starting from the car park viewpoint, you’ll be greeted by breathtaking views of Cow Green Reservoir and the surrounding fells.  As you make your way down the well-marked footpaths alongside the reservoir, keep an eye out for the first signs of the blue gentian flowers popping up along the roadside, along with other alpine flowers that add a splash of color to the landscape.

As you continue on your journey, you’ll pass by the impressive Cow Green Dam, a massive structure that was built in the 1970s to supply water to the northeast of England. From there, you’ll begin a steep and scrambly descent down Cauldron Snout, a stunning waterfall that cascades down the rocks and into the River Tees below.

As you wind your way along the river, keep an eye out for the many different species of birds and wildlife that call the area home. If you’re lucky, you may even spot a rare black grouse or an elusive ring ouzel.

After passing through the Widdybank Farm, you’ll begin your ascent back up to the car park, taking in the gorgeous views of the surrounding fells and moorlands as you go. Along the way, you’ll learn about the geological formations that make this area so unique, including the Whin Sill and Great Limestone.

This incredible hike is part of the Moor House-Upper Teesdale National Nature Reserve, an area that is home to a wide range of rare and endangered plant and animal species. Whether you’re an experienced hiker or just looking for a leisurely stroll through some of England’s most beautiful countryside, the Cow Green Geological Trail Walk is an experience you won’t soon forget.

So, pack a lunch, put on your hiking boots, and get ready to explore the stunning landscapes of Upper Teesdale National Nature Reserve on the Cow Green Geological Trail Walk.  Don’t forget to bring your binoculars and camera!
